I do stuff with a Phil all the time we are good friends, I learn a lot from him.
You painted some crazy skate too, are gonna paint some snowboards?
I have been asked to do snowboards but I never have time. Plus I am not really into it, I hate being cold, I would rather surf.
You work with other artists such as adrian wiesman...for lost, tell us about the meeting of this company?
All those guys came after I left, so I have not met them. I am stoked that they are able to follow my path and do great art. Lost was really cool in the early days, we all made money off my art, but I left because I did not want to be known as the lost artist. I like to do my own thing.
What is your relationship with the other artist of this surf company?
I know the guys from the very beginning, Matt Biolis is great artists, and Max and Gilbo were awesome too, lots people do not even know them or their art. We met Spoto in Florida, He was great and got on the program allowing me to travel. Anyone else came much later.
Where does come the idea to make a masterpiece with 3 or 6 boards, we ve seen such painting with some graffiti artist? Do graffiti inspire you?
It really came from the trade shows were I would have to paint all the boards along the wall, I would start at one end and just go around. I began to link them together for fun. They ended up looking great in windows and on walls. I started selling five boards at once, just because they look cool. I never got into graffiti, I always have lived by the ocean, not much inner city. I am amazed at what they can do.
Creation seems to be the word to define the SAN CLEMENTE scene, can you explain why, crazy surfers FLECHER ARCHY..., way of surfing WARD BESHEN,
paintings DREW BROPHY?
I think creative people are attracted to certain places, San Clem is magic, kinda like j-bay, Byron bay, or San Sebastian. Creation just flows.
It seems drew brophy s inspiring some artistic surfers, The fletchers always had painted board, besh has always try too, Jean da silva, the young NAT YOUNG...?
Rick Griffin did boards in San Clem, and Roy Gonzales pick up were he left off and did a lot of boards for Fletcher and Arch. They were always in the Mags. I guess I picked up were they left off and the cycle continues.
When we see you you're always painting every where, board, wall, piece, cars, music instruments...

I still live in San Clemente with my wife Maria and son Dylan.
FSM : - It is said that you are a brillant surfer, you even dreamt to be professional...?
DB : Of course when I was a Kid I dreamed of surfing the world, but being a pro seemed kinda lame, like dancing monkeys, contest are not for me. I have done them for fun, but I do not take them seriously. Today they have pros that just travel and surf, I think that would be cool. I have been able to do that on my own over time, I really enjoy traveling and searching for big waves. I guess I am more of a soul surfer.
You are known all over the world for your amazing, crazy terrific paintings on surfboards ...
Yes I guess, I kinda changed the way they were painted, In the 90s there were white boards, black wetsuits, and corporate logos. I just painted what I thought was cool and funny. It took a while but people started to like it.
When did you start painting and drawing?
I been drawing an surfing since I was a little kid, its all I ever been good at.
As an artist who or what inspire you the most in your creation?
Surfing and nature inspire me the most, also Guys like Chris Lundy, Rick Griffin, Bill Ogden, and of course Dali, Picasso.

I have painted my own boards since I was a little kid, I painted my friends boards, and eventually worked at the local surfboard factory in Myrtle Beach painting all the boards. From there I worked in Hawaii painting boards for all of pros, and then in California, I did a lot of boards for Stewart when they were huge, When Lost started I was right there, They let me do whatever I wanted, It was great and it blew up. I was able to Travel all around the world painting and surfing. I still do.
