Warm up Captured by Australia's Surfing Life

BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland (Wednesday, October 21, 2009) - While competition was called off yesterday, it’s impossible for the world’s best surfers to turn off the inner drive that they wake up to each morning, and often times, we see some incredible training sessions going down. Yesterday was no different, with ASP Dream Tour rookies Michel Bourez (PYF) and Tim Boal (FRA), Aritz Aranburu (EUK), and reigning nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater having a slay at the Supertubes set up. Australia’s Surfing Life was on hand to capture the action. This... is their story...

Turns out we didn’t even need to look at the beach to make a call. But we did. Everyone who had to be down there gritted their teeth and charged out into the dark and the horizontal rain to Supertubes for a huddled meeting around the back of a portacabin, where Damien Hardman and head judge Perry Hatchett told us it was all over for the day.

In the time it took us to get down there, stand in the rain then drive back to the hotel, Sharpy, the smug bugger, had enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and retired to post the following blog on his own website, Slidemag.co.uk

Waking up to the sound of torrential rain and the wind whistling through the cracks in the Hotel Soleil Peniche is as good an alarm clock as you could wish for. Nature’s way of saying, “wake up there fella! Time to be functioning so you can go through the pantomime of pretending that a surf contest might happen today.”

So you dutifully trudge downstairs (in the lift, those two floors are a real er first thing) and get breakfast, lingering while web guys, event guys and judges all don waterproofs and unsuitable shoes to go and get piss wet and confirm the bleeding obvious that the sea is a blown out mess of chop and dross and there will be no surfing today.
