
BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland (Monday, July 20, 2009) - Amidst the mind-blowing performances and perfect waves of last week’s Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, the inaugural ’Clash of the Icons’ went down between Australia’s Mark Occhilupo and America’s Tom Curren. Boasting four ASP World Titles between them, the duo had previously been tied at 8-all in man-on-man match-ups and the two went at it twice in the chilly waters of South Africa, each claiming a win and bringing the record up to nine a piece. ASL : So, how did it feel being out in the water with Occ again after all these years?
Tom Curren: Well, it was really interesting. It just brought back memories. One thing in particular was when he got this 8.67, he was paddling for the wave and the look of concentration on his face, he has this certain look that he gets, it just brought back memories. His upper lip goes back and I thought, okay, he’s going to trying hard on this wave. It was good.
ASL : Did you chat much out in the water?
Tom Curren: A little bit, not too much.
