HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Monday, July 13, 2009) – After four events on the ASP Dream Tour current sophomore Jordy Smith, 21, is currently rated eighth and seems to have worked out the kinks that often come along with a rookie year adjustment to the ruthless competition that comes along with doing battle against the world’s best. Now the South African powerhouse is awaiting his first heat at Jeffreys Bay, a wave he knows as well as anyone else on tour. Surfline.com caught up with Smith before he hit the water at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay. This… is their story…

Freshman year is rough whether you’re in high school or the ASP World Tour. After a somewhat up-and-down first year on Tour, it appears Jordy Smith has things a bit more figured out than he did in 2008.

Ranked 8th after four events, Jordy Smith seems to have grasped the handle of this Top 45 thing. Surfline caught up with him recently at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay to see what has changed.


Surfline : You’ve been doing all kinds of crazy stuff on trips do you feel like the judging on Tour has evolved to where you’d bring the "get-the-clip" mentality to a heat?

Jordy Smith : Yes, I have been having a lot more fun this year, just doing what I want on the waves. As opposed to last year when I was kind of more structured on a wave. I have just been taking on waves this year and doing what I feel. Luckily, it’s just been paying off for me.
