PENICHE, PORTUGAL- Following the success of the Rip Curl Pro Search in 2009, Rip Curl is heading back down to Peniche in 2010!

Lisbon (Portugal), 23th June 2010. Today, Rip Curl International and Rip Curl Europe officially announced that their ASP World Tour stage will once again be held in Supertubos (Peniche). This year from the 7th to 18th October, the Rip Curl Pro, 5th ASP Women's stop (of 9) and the 8th event on the men world circuit (of 10) will once again be coming to the mythical Portuguese shores of Peniche.

"We are very happy to be holding this event once again in 2010. We want to stage the event every year. It’s so encouraging to see how much the surfers, the media and the public appreciate the fact that the world’s best male and female surfers come to surf the waves of this great country. Along the coastline are some really excellent spots and unbelievable waves. We’re as motivated as ever to host the ASP Tour at Peniche once again, especially at the Supertubos spot. It’s a world-class wave that is certainly one of the best beach breaks in the world!” says Francisco Spinola, Marketing Manager forRip Curl Portugal and the project coordinator.  

Supertubos is a powerful wave that is fuelled by the long and deep swells coming from the Atlantic Ocean, which can reach up to 4 to 5 metres in height. Because it looks so similar to the Hawaiian Banzai Pipeline, many surfers have nicknamed this wave ‘the European pipe’. During the Rip Curl Pro Search in October 2009, the wave was pretty dangerous, guaranteeing not only some sensational surfing, but also some nasty injuries for some of the pro riders (including Owen Wright, knocked out in the semi-final).

Lisbonne (Portugal), 20 Juin 2010 - C’est aujourd’hui que Rip Curl International et Rip Curl Europe annoncent officiellement la reconduite d’une étape de l’ASP World Tour à Supertubos (Peniche). Cette année, le Rip Curl Pro, 5ème étape du circuit féminin (sur 9) et 8ème étape du circuit masculin (sur 10), aura lieu à nouveau sur le mythique spot portugais de Supertubos à Peniche, du 7 au 18 octobre.

 « Nous sommes très heureux de reconduire l’événement en 2010 avec la volonté de le faire perdurer dans le temps.  En voyant l’engouement des surfeurs, des médias et du public quant à l’arrivée des meilleurs surfeurs et surfeuses mondiaux dans ce magnifique pays qu’est le Portugal. La côte offre des spots de grande classe et des vagues incroyables. Nous revenons donc décidés à recevoir au mieux la caravane du Tour ASP à Peniche, et plus précisément sur le spot de Supertubos, une vague de classe internationale et certainement l’un des meilleurs beachbreaks du monde ! » Commente Francisco Spinola, responsable Marketing Rip Curl Portugal et coordinateur du projet.

Supertubos est une vague puissante, se nourrissant des longues et profondes houles de l’Océan Atlantique, occasionnant des vagues très creuses de 4 à 5 mètres. De nombreux surfeurs l’ont surnommé « le Pipeline européen », dû à sa ressemblance avec la célèbre vague hawaiienne de Banzai Pipeline. Durant le Rip Curl Pro Search en octobre 2009, la vague s’est avérée dangereuse assurant un show spectaculaire mais aussi quelques blessures chez les pros (Owen Wright notamment éliminé de ce fait en demi-finale).

Cette compétition sera l’occasion de tester le nouveau format ASP, avec notamment la seeding list réduite aux 32 meilleurs surfeurs du Dream Tour.
