Surfers have always been explorers. Inspired by dark spots on the global map, they have continually chased the most elusive moment in surfing... discovering and surfing the perfect wave.
But surfers quickly realised that this was only half the story. Their greatest discovery was that the journey mattered more than the destination. They returned to their local breaks at Narrabeen, Malibu and Hossegor changed and armed with new stories that inspired the surfers around them.
Surftourist.com is a way for surfers to share those stories.
According to the co-founder Ben Webster, "We want to discover uncharted and perfect waves. But the reality for most surfers is that they can only travel four weeks of the year. That's 48 weeks of going to work and not travelling. We built Surftourist to do two things, help surfers cram the best trip into their four weeks off each year and keep them stoked for the other 48 weeks."
The new website uses Google Maps to help surfers plot and navigate the globe. They can log and share their past adventures as well as plan their next adventure by checking out new destinations logged by other surfers.
"To be honest, I'm stuck at my desk for most of the year too," says co-founder Dylan Fogarty-MacDonald. "So I can't wait to see the stories and the photos start to trickle in... it will keep me inspired to get out there."
Founded and built by two geeky surfers on the east coast of Australia, Surftourist.com will also map local and metropolitan spots.
"I never get tired of surfing my local breaks," says Dylan.
